DIY Luggage Tags

I love luggage tags. Not only do they make it easier for you to spot your luggage in baggage claim, but they add some life and personality to otherwise boring suitcases and bags. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to repurpose old gift cards into colorful luggage tags!

Materials
  • gift cards
  • colored tissue paper
  • paint brush
  • glossy Mod Podge
  • scissors
  • Sharpie
  • drill/drill bit
  • thin ribbons

The gift cards I chose to use.

I decided on tissue paper because I love the way the paper blends together when collaged. You can also use patterned paper, wrapping paper, etc.

Start by ripping up pieces of colored tissue paper. Dip your brush into the Mod Podge and apply it to the back of the gift card.

Place the torn pieces of paper onto the Mod Podge. Brush a thin coat of Mod Podge over the tissue paper to seal it. You can make a pattern or place the paper down randomly like I did.

Continue this process until the entire gift card is covered.

With one layer of tissue paper you can still see the text through the tissue paper, especially if you use light colors. If you want to mask the letters, add another layer of Mod Podge and tissue paper.

After applying the second layer, you'll end up with something like this. (I liked the look of the pink/orange/yellow/black one with the text so I didn't do a second layer.) Once you're done, add another coat of Mod Podge over all of the tissue paper to seal it. Let it dry completely.

Once the Mod Podge is dry, flip over your luggage tag and use scissors to trim the excess tissue paper off. I recommend sealing the luggage tag with Mod Podge again after trimming. Don't forget to lightly brush over the edges of the luggage tag!

Now it's time to drill holes into your luggage tags. There are probably other ways to make holes but I'm a bit of a drill fanatic :)

Use a Sharpie to mark where you want to drill your hole then drill your hole.

I used a 1/4 inch drill bit, but you can use whatever size you want.

Brush on some Mod Podge around your freshly drilled hole to ensure that the tissue paper stays down.

Select ribbons or actual luggage tag connectors (not sure what they're actually called haha) and insert them through the holes you drilled.

Now all that's left is tie your luggage tags onto anything and everything. My suitcase currently has two of these DIY luggage tags :)
